I shrank a hoodie once that I genuinely loved. Not a Parke  this was before I knew better but the experience of pulling something out of the dryer and holding it up and watching it be obviously, irreversibly smaller than it went in is one of those small life disasters that stays with you.Cotton shrinks. That’s just what it does when heat gets involved. The question isn’t whether your Parke hoodie will shrink  it’s whether you give it the conditions to shrink or not. Turns out those conditions are completely avoidable with about thirty extra seconds of effort per wash.

Why Cotton Shrinks in the First Place

Cotton fiber is twisted under tension during spinning and weaving. Heat and mechanical agitation release that tension and the fiber contracts back toward its natural relaxed state. That contraction is shrinkage and it’s permanent  there’s no reliable way to un-shrink cotton once it’s happened. The two things that cause this are  parkeus.com aggressive mechanical action. Hot water in the wash. Hot air in the dryer. Heavy tumbling that stresses the fiber while it’s wet and vulnerable. Remove those conditions and the fiber stays where it is.Parke uses combed cotton at a heavier weight than most hoodies. The heavier construction resists shrinkage somewhat better than thin cotton — more fiber mass means more resistance to contraction. But it’s still cotton and it will still shrink under heat. The weight buys you some forgiveness, not immunity.

The Wash Settings That Actually Matter

Cold water. This is the main one. Not cool, not warm — cold. Modern detergents are formulated to clean effectively in cold water so you’re not sacrificing cleaning performance. You’re just removing the heat that triggers fiber contraction.Gentle cycle over regular cycle. The regular cycle agitates more aggressively. Wet cotton fiber under mechanical stress stretches in ways that don’t fully recover  producing a different kind of distortion from heat shrinkage but still unwanted. Gentle cycle does the cleaning without the unnecessary stress.Turn the hoodie inside out before washing. The outside surface experiences less friction during the wash this way. Friction causes surface wear that affects color and texture over time  inside out washing slows that accumulation.

Detergent Keep It Simple

Regular detergent is fine. You don’t need specialty fabric wash for a cotton hoodie. What you do need is the right amount  more detergent than the garment needs leaves residue that makes fabric stiff and traps particles that act as mild abrasives during subsequent washes.Half the recommended amount works for a single hoodie wash. The recommendations on detergent packaging are calibrated for full loads of heavily soiled items. A hoodie in a partial load with normal wear doesn’t need that volume.Avoid fabric softener consistently. It coats the cotton fiber with a waxy residue that makes the hoodie feel softer temporarily and reduces breathability and moisture absorption permanently over repeated use. The softness wears off. The reduced performance doesn’t.

Drying  Where Most People Go Wrong

This is where shrinkage actually happens for most people. The wash is fine, the dryer is the problem.Air dry. Every time if possible. Hang the hoodie on a proper hanger  not a wire hanger that distorts the shoulder  and let it dry naturally. Takes longer, requires finding somewhere to hang it, solves the shrinkage problem completely. If you genuinely need the dryer  traveling, no space to hang, whatever the reason  usethe lowest heat setting available and remove the hoodie while it’s still slightly damp. The remaining moisture evaporates naturally without the continued heat exposure that causes contraction. Never dry completely in the machine.Don’t wring the hoodie before hanging. Wringing twists wet fiber under tension and causes distortion that drying can’t fully correct. Press excess water out gently rather than twisting.

The Hoodie Already Shrank  Now What

If it’s already happened there are partial fixes but no complete ones. Submerging the hoodie in lukewarm water with a small amount of hair conditioner for twenty minutes relaxes the fiber slightly. While still wet, gently stretch the hoodie back toward its original dimensions and dry flat rather than hanging. This works better for minor shrinkage than for significant contraction. The real answer is that prevention is dramatically more effective than reversal. A hoodie that never shrinks is the goal. One washing session with the wrong settings can permanently change a garment that would otherwise have lasted years.
