I was not surprised. Peer influence is one of the strongest forces in a sixteen-year-old’s decision-making, and subject selection lands at precisely the age when belonging feels more urgent than almost anything else. Nobody wants to be the only one in their friend group sitting in a different Chemistry class. Nobody wants to eat lunch alone because their timetable no longer overlaps.
But here is what I have learned from watching hundreds of students go through the DP. The friendships survive different timetables. What does not survive is a student’s motivation when they are two terms into an HL subject they never actually wanted. There is also a genuine practical logic. Studying with friends is easier. You can share notes, compare IA drafts, revise together before exams. In Singapore, where students often live far from each other and commute long distances, having a study partner in the same class is convenient.
The problem is that these benefits are real but small, while the costs of a poorly matched subject are real and large. A study buddy might save you a few hours a month. A wrong HL subject can cost you two points on your final score and hundreds of hours of misery over two years. The maths does not favour the friend-based approach.
The Three Ways Peer Influence Distorts Subject Choices
1. The “Smart Group” Effect
In many Singapore schools, there is an unspoken hierarchy of subject combinations. Triple HL science plus Math AA HL sits at the top. Humanities-heavy combinations sit lower. Students who identify as part of the “smart group” feel pressure to take the top-tier combination regardless of whether it suits them.
I have worked with students who took HL Physics purely because dropping it felt like admitting they were not clever enough. They were plenty clever. They were just clever in ways HL Physics does not reward. Some later sought ib physics tuition and clawed their way to a 5 or 6 — but they would have scored a 7 in a subject that fit them naturally.
2. The Comfort Cluster

Question 3: Have I looked at an actual HL past paper for this subject, or am I relying on second-hand descriptions?
Second-hand descriptions are almost always filtered through someone else’s strengths and weaknesses.
Question 4: Does this subject connect to at least one university course I am genuinely considering?
If it connects to nothing you want, ask yourself why it is on your list.
Question 5: When I imagine sitting a three-hour final exam in this subject in November of Grade 12, do I feel capable or trapped?
Your imagination is not perfectly accurate, but it is surprisingly honest.
Tutor Insights: The Patterns Behind Peer-Driven Choices
Tutor observation: After working with hundreds of IB students in Singapore, one recurring pattern we observe is that peer-driven subject choices produce a distinctive grade profile: students score well in Grade 11 Term 1, when content is introductory and their friends’ enthusiasm carries them, then decline steadily from Term 2 onward. Self-driven choices show the opposite curve. Grades start modestly and climb as the student’s genuine interest deepens with the material.
Classroom observation: Students in peer-driven subjects tend to study with their friends but not effectively. Sessions turn into social time. Difficult questions get skipped by group consensus. A Decision Matrix You Can Actually Use
Scoring your options removes some of the emotion from the choice. For each HL subject you are considering, rate it from 1 to 5 on the criteria below, then total the score.

A subject scoring below 30 out of 50 should be treated with suspicion. A subject scoring above 40 is a strong HL candidate regardless of what anyone around you is doing.
Handling the Social Side Without Losing Friends
Choosing independently does not mean isolating yourself. It means being clear with yourself first, then managing the social fallout with a bit of tact. Here is what has worked for students I have coached.
Decide before you discuss. Do your research and complete the self-audit privately. Once you know your reasoning, group conversations become far less destabilising. You are sharing a decision, not seeking permission.
Have a short, honest script. Something like “I looked at the courses I want and picked what fits” ends most conversations. You do not owe anyone a defence.
Offer alternatives to shared classes. Suggest revising together for the SL subjects you do share, or studying in the same library at the same time even if the content differs. Proximity does not require identical timetables.
Expect the teasing to fade. It always does. By the time IA deadlines hit in Grade 11 Semester 2, nobody has the energy to care what anyone else is studying.
Notice who supports you. The friends who respect an independent decision are the ones worth keeping close through the DP anyway.

- Run the five-question self-audit on every HL choice tonight. Write the answers down. Any subject that fails Question 1 goes back under review.
- Complete the decision matrix for at least five candidate subjects. Include one or two you have not seriously considered. The results sometimes surprise students.
- Attempt one HL past paper question set in your top three choices — alone. Not with friends. Not with a tutor. Just you, a timer, and the paper. Note how each one makes you feel.
- Draft your two-sentence explanation for each HL. If you cannot write it without referencing another person, the choice is not yet yours.
- Tell your closest friend your decision after you have made it, not before. Watch how it feels to say it out loud. Confidence in that moment is a good sign. Dread is information too.
Your friends are not choosing your subjects with bad intentions. They are choosing their own, with their own strengths, goals, and fears. The mistake is assuming their map works for your terrain.
Two years from now, when the results come out in July, nobody will remember who sat in which class. They will remember the score. Make sure it belongs to a combination you chose for yourself.
